The Intensive Care Society (ICS) was founded in 1970. It was established to bring together clinicians treating critically ill patients within intensive care and high dependency units. Its purpose was to enable clinical professionals to share education and research with the aim of continuously enhancing intensive care treatments in the UK and increasing the number of successful outcomes for patients treated within intensive care environments. HRH The Princess Royal is the patron.
Delivering the best possible treatment for patients during their stay in intensive care depends on good communication between clinicians and the diagnostic, medical equipment and pharmaceutical manufacturers who develop innovative new treatments. To help achieve this, an Industry Membership Scheme was launched in 1998 to bring companies and intensivists together to further develop relationships and, hence, improve patient care.
Although the Industry Membership Scheme had initially attracted companies to become members, it had begun to plateau at 20 members and the ICS was keen to prevent a gradual decline in membership numbers.
In September 2007, JPA was engaged by the ICS to provide sales consultancy services to review the Industry Membership Scheme and propose and implement changes to secure new members and achieve a renewed interest in the scheme amongst existing members. In just seven months, JPA has helped increase membership from 21 medical manufacturing companies to 40 and engaged with all existing members.
